City Council Member Set On Fire By Attacker At His Office

Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler, 38, was attacked and set on fire in his workplace on Wednesday (July 30). The incident occurred at Showcase Magazine’s office when a man, identified as Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, allegedly forced his way into the building with a five-gallon bucket of gasoline. According to a report by Fox News, Hayes poured gasoline on Vogler and ignited it as Vogler attempted to escape.

Vogler sustained serious burn injuries and was airlifted to a burn center in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he is receiving treatment. His current condition remains unknown. The Danville Police Department confirmed that the attack was a targeted personal assault and not politically motivated. Hayes was arrested nearby and is in police custody with charges pending.

Andrew Brooks, publisher of Showcase Magazine, expressed shock and sadness over the attack, stating, “This type of senseless act of violence has to stop.” He also confirmed that Vogler is conscious and able to communicate. Vogler, a Virginia Commonwealth University graduate, has been a city council member since 2012 and was the youngest person ever elected to the council at age 24.

The attack has prompted an outpouring of support from the community, with Danville Vice Mayor James Buckner urging prayers for Vogler’s recovery. Police continue to investigate the incident, interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence.
