Chuck Schumer Introduces ‘No Kings Act’ To Eliminate Presidential Immunity

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced legislation to eliminate presidential immunity. The “No Kings Act” was filed in response to the recent Supreme Court ruling that granted presidents immunity from criminal charges when they engage in official acts.

The bill, which has over two dozen Democratic sponsors, states that only Congress has the power to decide “to whom federal criminal laws may be applied.”

“Given the dangerous and consequential implications of the Court’s ruling, legislation would be the fastest and most efficient method to correcting the grave precedent the Trump ruling presented,” Schumer said in a statement. “With this glaring and partisan overreach, Congress has an obligation — and a constitutional authority — to act as a check and balance to the judicial branch.”

If the legislation passes the Senate, it is unclear how it will fare in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the Supreme Court ruling, which was a massive victory for former President Donald Trump. He is trying to fend off several criminal cases related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House.
