Southern California is preparing for a significant storm system expected to hit during the Christmas holiday, bringing heavy rain and cooler temperatures. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm is fueled by an atmospheric river and is set to arrive between Tuesday and Thursday. Meteorologist Henry DiCarlo from KTLA stated that the region will experience a “really good storm” during Christmas Eve and possibly through Christmas Day.
The NWS forecasts that coastal and valley areas in Southern California could receive two to four inches of rain, while the foothills and mountains might see double those amounts. The storm poses potential travel hazards, especially as it coincides with a peak holiday travel period. The NWS advises travelers to prepare for difficult road conditions and possible delays.
Fox LA reports that the storm could also bring high winds, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph in certain areas, increasing the risk of power outages and isolated tree damage. Residents are encouraged to clear rain gutters and secure outdoor decorations before the winds pick up mid-week.
The Los Angeles Times notes that the storm could end a long dry spell for the state, with the potential for flooding, landslides, and rapid flows of mud and debris in recently burned areas.
