Two additional suspects have been charged in connection with the daring robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris last month. According to the Paris Public Prosecutor’s office, a 37-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman were charged with organized robbery and conspiracy to commit organized robbery. Both suspects have denied any involvement in the heist.
The robbery, which took place on October 19, involved the theft of Napoleonic-era jewels valued at over $100 million. The thieves used a stolen vehicle-mounted mechanical lift to access the Galerie d’Apollon via a balcony, where they used disc cutters to break into display cases. They escaped on scooters before switching to cars. The heist lasted only four minutes.
Earlier, two men, aged 34 and 39, were charged after partially admitting their involvement in the robbery. One was apprehended at Charles de Gaulle Airport with a one-way ticket to Algeria, while the other was arrested in a suburb of Paris. Both face charges of theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy.
The investigation, led by Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, involves around 100 investigators. Despite the arrests, the stolen jewels have not been recovered, raising concerns they may have been taken abroad. French Culture Minister Rachida Dati has called for improved security measures at the Louvre, including the installation of anti-intrusion devices and a security audit by the end of the year.
