Chapman Students Face Hearings for Megaphone Use at Protest

At least five students from Chapman University are facing administrative hearings for using megaphones during a protest held last month. The protest called on university leaders to protect diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programming. The protest was sparked by the sudden administrative leave of Provost Norma Bouchard and Vice President of DEI Reg Stewart, announced on March 12.

The protest took place after the Trump administration sent warning letters to several colleges, including Chapman, threatening to cut federal funding if the U.S. Department of Education finds that they are not adequately protecting Jewish students. According to the Los Angeles Times, the protest was organized by a coalition of 33 student groups and took place in front of Memorial Hall, where students were initially prevented from speaking due to barricades.

Chapman University’s Dean of Student Affairs Jerry Price informed students that the use of megaphones was against university policy during class hours without prior approval. Despite this, students continued their demonstration, emphasizing their right to protest. Sociology professor Pete Simi attended the rally, stating that the letter from the Trump administration was part of a broader strategy to create division within universities.

The administrative leave of Bouchard and Stewart has raised concerns among students and faculty. Some, like Josh Olatunji, a junior at Chapman, expressed shock over Stewart’s leave, especially given his role in supporting Black students on campus. The university has not provided specific reasons for the administrative changes, citing privacy concerns. However, the Orange County Register reports that the DEI office had faced scrutiny earlier this year.

As the hearings approach, Chapman University maintains its commitment to supporting all students and is working with Dr. Gabriela Castañeda, who now leads the DEI team, on next steps.
