Tropical Depression Chantal has brought significant rainfall to North Carolina, causing widespread flooding and prompting numerous water rescues. The storm, which made landfall as a tropical storm near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, early Sunday (July 6), has been downgraded but continues to pose a threat with heavy rains and potential flash flooding.
In central North Carolina, areas experienced up to two months’ worth of rain in a short period, leading to major flooding. Chapel Hill’s fire department conducted over 50 water rescues as floodwaters threatened homes and displaced more than 60 residents, according to The Washington Post. In the town of Haw River, the river reached its highest level since 1996.
The National Weather Service reported widespread flash flooding across Orange, Alamance, and Chatham counties, with rainfall amounts reaching up to 8 inches in some areas. The Eno River rose about 20 feet in four hours.
Another storm slammed Texas over the weekend, causing major flooding that claimed the lives of 81 people.
