In a pivotal move, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy announced on the Senate floor that he will vote “yes” to confirm Todd Blanche as the next U.S. Attorney General. This announcement, made on Thursday (August 6), comes after Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins declared their intention to vote “no.” With Mitch McConnell absent from the Senate, a third GOP “no” vote would have blocked Blanche’s confirmation.
The Senate Judiciary Committee had previously advanced Blanche’s nomination with a 12-10 party-line vote. While some Republican senators, including John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, expressed concerns about Blanche’s role in a controversial IRS settlement, they ultimately supported him after securing an agreement to rescind the $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund.”
According to ABC News, Collins cited Blanche’s actions that eroded the Department of Justice’s independence as her reason for opposition. Murkowski remains undecided, but Cassidy’s support ensures Blanche’s path to confirmation.
Blanche, who has been serving as acting attorney general since April, was appointed by President Donald Trump after firing Pam Bondi. The Senate may vote on Blanche’s nomination before the August recess, potentially confirming him as the permanent attorney general by the weekend.
As reported by Politico, Utah Senator John Curtis also announced his support for Blanche, leaving the nominee just one vote shy of securing confirmation. Curtis praised Blanche’s receptivity and understanding of issues raised during the nomination process.
Blanche’s nomination has sparked debate, with Democratic Senator Cory Booker warning of potential dangers and arguing that Blanche would act as “Trump’s sword against his adversaries.” Despite these concerns, Blanche’s confirmation appears likely, with the final vote expected soon.
