Cases Dropped for Some Officers in Juvenile Hall Fight Scandal

State prosecutors have dismissed nearly half of the cases against 30 Los Angeles County probation officers accused of facilitating “gladiator-style” fights at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.

The dismissals leave 16 cases remaining, with four officers entering “no contest” pleas, allowing them to complete community service in exchange for charge dismissal.

The California Attorney General’s Office acknowledged the dismissals, stating they adjust treatment based on evidence. Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized that charges are based on law and facts, and the criminal culpability of each individual is assessed uniquely. “We will continue to be firm and fair as we work to secure accountability,” Bonta said.

The original indictments, stemming from surveillance footage published by the Los Angeles Times, involved 69 fights from June to December 2023, impacting 143 youths aged 12 to 18. The footage showed officers watching as youths attacked a 17-year-old, with some officers laughing and shaking hands with attackers.

Defense attorneys argue the cases were overcharged, sweeping in officers who were merely following directives. Curtis Chambers, president of the Los Angeles County Probation Officers Union, expressed concerns about due process, stating, “What we are seeing raises real questions about a rush to judgment.”

The remaining cases continue, with some defendants still facing charges. Los Angeles County has already paid a $2.7 million settlement to one teen involved in the fights, with others filing similar claims. The facility, declared “unsuitable” due to staffing shortages, remains open amid ongoing legal battles over its future.
