Volkswagen is set to reintroduce physical buttons in its vehicles after receiving significant backlash from drivers over the use of touchscreens for essential functions. Starting with the ID.2all model in 2026, the German automaker will bring back physical controls for volume, seat heating, fan speed, and hazard lights, as confirmed by Volkswagen’s design chief, Andreas Mindt.
“Honestly, it’s a car. It’s not a phone: it’s a car,” Mindt said in an interview with Autocar.
The decision to return to physical buttons follows widespread complaints from drivers who found touch-sensitive controls challenging to use while driving. This change will apply to all future Volkswagen models, ensuring that essential functions are easily accessible without navigating complex touchscreen menus.
The move comes after a 2024 J.D. Power study revealed that many drivers found passenger display screens unnecessary and challenging to use. The study highlighted that physical controls allow drivers to keep their eyes on the road, unlike touchscreens, which require visual attention.
Despite the shift back to buttons, Volkswagen will continue to incorporate touchscreens for less critical functions, maintaining a balance between digital and analog controls. The change is part of a broader industry trend, with other automakers like Hyundai also reconsidering the use of touchscreens due to customer feedback.
Volkswagen’s decision aligns with upcoming European Union regulations that will require certain physical controls to achieve a full five-star safety rating, ensuring the brand meets safety standards while catering to consumer preferences.
