LOS ANGELES (CNS) – “Captain America: Brave New World” has opened with $100 million over the four-day Presidents Day weekend to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Monday.
Disney’s latest entry in the Marvel universe stars Anthony Mackie in the title role, with Harrison Ford playing the president of the United States. It placed far ahead of “Paddington in Peru,” the third entry in the popular franchise about a talking bear, which opened with $16 million, Comscore reported.
“Dog Man” was third with $12.6 million, after spending its first two weeks in first place.
The slasher film “Heart Eyes” grossed $11 million Friday through Monday in its second weekend in theaters, followed by the Chinese animated blockbuster “Ne Zha 2,” which opened with $9.1 million this weekend in theaters in the United States and Canada.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Mufasa: The Lion King” ($5.2 million), “Love Hurts” ($4.7 million), “One of Them Days” ($3.3 million), “Chhaava” ($2.2 million) and “Companion” ($2.1 million).
This weekend’s overall four-day box office haul was estimated at $178.7 million. The year-to-date total is $893.4 million — up 20% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
