Canned Tuna Recalled Over ‘Potentially Fatal’ Design Flaw

Tri-Union Seafoods has issued a nationwide recall of canned tuna due to a defect that could lead to botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. The recall, announced on February 7, affects products sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brands. These products were available at major retailers, including Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Costco, and H-E-B across multiple states.

The recall was initiated after a manufacturing defect was found in the “easy open” pull tab can lids, which could compromise the seal integrity over time. This defect may cause the cans to leak or become contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that can lead to severe illness or death if not treated promptly. No illnesses have been reported so far.

For more information on the recall, including specific can codes and “Best if Used By” dates, visit the FDA’s website.

The FDA advises consumers to return the recalled products to the retailer for a full refund or dispose of them safely. Consumers can also contact Tri-Union Seafoods for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product. The company can be reached at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com or 833-374-0171.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that botulism can cause symptoms such as difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death. Consumers experiencing any symptoms after consuming the recalled products should seek immediate medical attention.
