Canned Tuna Recalled Over Deadly Poisoning Risk Shipped To Several States

Cans of tuna previously recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over a risk of botulism, a deadly food poisoning, were accidentally shipped to six different grocery store chains in nine U.S. states, according to a press release shared by the FDA on Monday (January 19).

Tri-Union Seafoods warned consumers that “a third-party distributor inadvertently released” the “easy open” pull tab Genova Yellowfin Tuna included in a February 2025 voluntary recall. The initial recall was announced after the company was notified by its supplier that the “easy open” pull tab can lid had a manufacturing defect, which potentially compromised the integrity of the product seal, resulting in leaks or clostridium botulinum.

The latest recall was initiated after Tri-Union Seafoods discovered that the quarantined cases from the February 2025 recall were shipped to Meijer stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin; Giant Foods stores in Maryland and Virginia; and Safeway, Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions stores in California. The recalled items include Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil 5.0 oz 4 Pack with a UPC number of 4800073265 and best if used by dates of January 21, 2028, and January 24, 2028, as well as Genova Yellowfin Tuna in in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt 5.0 oz with a UPC number of 4800013275 and a January 17, 2028, best if used by date.

Consumers are warned not to eat the product if it looks or smells spoiled and should throw away the recalled item or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Botulism is considered “a rare but serious illness” that “is caused by a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves and causes difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
