Cancer Survivor Has $8,000 Prosthetic Leg Stolen From His Car

A 20-year-old cancer survivor named Atticus Root had his prosthetic leg stolen from his car. Root, who lost his left leg to osteosarcoma at age 14, relies on the custom-made prosthetic for mobility and to work as a welder. The theft occurred when thieves broke into his car while he was out to dinner with friends, taking the prosthetic leg along with some work equipment.

The prosthetic, valued at approximately $8,000, includes a metal knee joint and running blade. Despite its monetary value, its true worth is immeasurable, as it allows Root to live more independently. His uncle, Joshua Veldstra, expressed the family’s frustration, telling NBC News, “It’s a ‘he just can’t catch a break’ kind of situation.”

Root’s family has raised nearly $12,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to replace the stolen leg, but they still hope for its return.

Portland police, in collaboration with Crime Stoppers of Oregon, are offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the recovery of the prosthetic. Anyone with information is encouraged to submit an anonymous tip.

Root’s mother, Irene, voiced her dismay on the GoFundMe page, stating, “Atticus was just beginning to feel better and get back on his ‘feet.’ He doesn’t deserve this.”

The family remains hopeful that the prosthetic will be found and returned soon.
