California’s EV Chargers Surpass Gas Pumps

California now boasts more electric vehicle (EV) chargers than gas pumps, marking a significant milestone in its transition to clean energy. The state has installed 178,549 public and shared private EV chargers, compared to roughly 120,000 gas nozzles, according to the California Energy Commission (CEC). This development highlights California’s commitment to expanding its EV infrastructure, with a focus on making electric vehicles more accessible to consumers.

The increase in EV chargers, which nearly doubled since 2023, is partly due to improved data collection and the identification of previously uncounted charging stations. Of the total chargers, more than 162,000 are Level 2 chargers, and nearly 17,000 are fast chargers. Additionally, over 700,000 Level 2 chargers are installed in single-family homes across the state.

Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized California’s dedication to providing more charging options, stating, “We now have nearly 50% more chargers than gas nozzles in the state, meaning you have more options than ever to charge your vehicle.” The state has approved a $1.4 billion investment plan to further expand its charging network, including projects like the Fast Charge California Project, which aims to install fast-charging stations at businesses and public locations.

The CEC continues to focus on improving the EV driver experience by gathering data to identify where chargers are most needed and tracking progress toward infrastructure goals. The state is also collaborating with private sector partners to accelerate the deployment of new charging infrastructure.

Despite these advancements, the demand for EV chargers continues to grow as more Californians choose zero-emission vehicles. California remains a leader in zero-emission vehicle infrastructure, with one in four new cars sold in the state being electric. As the state works toward a clean transportation future, it is also prioritizing clean fuel production, public transit enhancements, and a smarter electric grid.
