California’s voter guide, sent to 23 million registered voters, is under scrutiny after including a controversial statement from gubernatorial candidate Don Grundmann.
Grundmann, who ranked 54th out of 61 candidates in the June 2 race, submitted a statement containing antisemitic conspiracy theories, including claims that Israel orchestrated the 9/11 attacks and killed activist Charlie Kirk.
The statement has sparked outrage, with the California Legislative Jewish Caucus and Jewish advocacy groups condemning its inclusion in an official government publication. Critics argue that the statement goes beyond protected free speech and poses a risk to public safety.
The California Secretary of State’s office stated that current laws limit their ability to reject candidate statements based on content. However, Assemblymember Gail Pellerin and other lawmakers are pushing for legislative changes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
