California Sues Trump Over Transgender Athlete Funding Threat

California has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to prevent the withholding of federal funds over the state’s policy allowing transgender athletes to compete in sports. The lawsuit, filed by Attorney General Rob Bonta on Monday, challenges President Donald Trump’s threat to cut over $8 billion in federal aid to California schools after AB Hernandez, a transgender athlete, won two events at a state track meet.

The Trump administration has been preparing to cancel federal funding for California, targeting educational institutions like the University of California and California State University systems. According to CNN, the administration is considering withholding grants, with a focus on schools accused of antisemitism.

In response, California’s lawsuit seeks to block the federal government from suspending funds, arguing that the administration’s actions are both unlawful and unconstitutional. The Los Angeles Times reports that the lawsuit claims the Justice Department overstepped its authority by demanding that California school districts ban transgender athletes.

California’s legal action is part of a broader conflict with the Trump administration, which has repeatedly targeted the state over its progressive policies. California has allocated $25 million to fight such federal policies, with only $5 million spent so far. The lawsuit also highlights the ongoing debate over transgender rights and the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment, with California arguing that its policies ensure an inclusive environment for all students.
