California Snowpack at 90%: Implications for Water Supply

The Sierra Nevada snowpack in California is currently at 90% of the historical average, marking the third consecutive year of near-average or above-average levels. This is a significant improvement from 2022, when the snowpack was only 38% of the average. According to state officials, this year’s snowpack is crucial for determining water availability during the dry season, which typically starts in May.

Andy Reising, manager of the Snow Surveys and Water Supply Forecasting Unit, noted that the snowpack conditions at the start of April are near or above average, which is “great news for the state.” The snowpack supplies about one-third of California’s water, making it a vital resource for the region. The snowpack levels vary across the state, with the northern Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade peaks measuring 108% of the average, while the central and southern Sierra are at 83% and 81%, respectively.

The current levels are promising, but there is a regional discrepancy in precipitation. Northern California has experienced wet conditions, while Southern California has received only about 50% of its average annual rainfall. This disparity affects how much water the State Water Project can deliver, as noted by Karla Nemeth, Director of the Department of Water Resources.

Despite the challenges, reservoir levels statewide are well above average. Lake Shasta and Lake Oroville, two of the state’s largest reservoirs, are at 111% and 120% of their average capacities, respectively. This abundance of water is crucial for meeting the state’s needs, although most of it is allocated to farms.

State officials have announced an increase in water deliveries to users, with a final allocation expected in May or June. As more snow is forecasted, the snowpack levels could rise further, enhancing the water supply outlook for the year.
