California Repeals Electric Truck Rule Amid Federal Pushback

California’s ambitious electric truck sales mandate faced a significant setback as the California Air Resources Board voted to repeal the zero-emission purchasing rule for private fleets. This decision marks the end of the state’s aggressive push to transition the trucking sector to electric vehicles. Governor Gavin Newsom, during Climate Week, positioned California as a counter to federal actions against electric vehicles, but the repeal highlights the challenges faced by the state.

The move comes after the U.S. Senate voted to block California’s mandate phasing out gas-powered cars and diesel trucks, which could disrupt the state’s long-standing efforts to combat air pollution. According to Politico, the Senate’s decision followed a similar vote in the House, setting the stage for a legal battle between California and the Trump administration. Governor Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta announced plans to file a lawsuit, arguing that the move is an unconstitutional attack on California’s authority.

California’s mandate required 35% of new 2026 model cars sold in the state to be zero-emissions, with targets increasing to 68% in 2030 and 100% by 2035. The state may now have to rely on voluntary measures and financial incentives to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles. The repeal is seen as a blow to the state’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, particularly in areas like Los Angeles and the San Joaquin Valley, which suffer from severe air pollution.

The Senate’s action reflects growing political divisions over electric vehicle policies, with concerns about cost and infrastructure hindering broader adoption. While some lawmakers argue that the mandates are impractical, others emphasize the importance of maintaining stringent emissions standards to protect public health.
