California Prisons Ease Some Lockdowns Amid Ongoing Violence

Authorities have lifted restrictions at nine California prisons, while twelve others remain under lockdown due to ongoing violence. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) announced the partial rollback on Thursday. These measures were initially imposed in response to a surge in violence, overdoses, and contraband, affecting approximately 34,000 inmates since June 12.

The lockdowns, which have been described as the most severe since the COVID-19 pandemic, have restricted inmate movements and suspended privileges such as in-person visitation and communication. According to CalMatters, these measures have prompted a hunger strike involving hundreds of inmates protesting what they call “indiscriminate lockdowns” and “collective punishment.”

The CDCR has been criticized for its approach, with some experts and advocates arguing that the lockdowns amount to solitary confinement. Sharon Dolovich, a law professor at UCLA, said, “This is a blunt instrument when they should be using a scalpel.” Meanwhile, CDCR spokesperson Terri Hardy stated that the department is monitoring the hunger strike and remains committed to safety and security.

The recent violence includes armed assaults on staff and inmates, as well as several riots. CDCR Secretary Jeff Macomber emphasized the department’s obligation to ensure public safety, acknowledging the impact on rehabilitation programs and visitation.
