California is #1 on ‘Most Expensive’ States List

A recent CNBC study highlights the five most expensive states to live in 2025, despite President Trump’s claim of low inflation. According to the study, inflation remains a challenge for many Americans, particularly in certain states.

The study, based on data from the Council for Community and Economic Research, reveals that California is number one on the list. Key factors in that rating for California are costly home insurance rates due to wildfires, and the median home price exceeding $900,000. .

Hawaii, Florida, Colorado and Oregon rounded out the top five. In Oregon, high housing costs contribute significantly to its ranking. A loaf of bread in Portland, Oregon, costs 12% more than in Portland, Maine, and Oregonians pay more for groceries than residents in most other states.

Florida, traditionally seen as a retiree haven, faces a severe homeowners insurance crisis due to frequent hurricanes, making it one of the most expensive states. Hawaii’s remote location results in high costs for goods and services, despite its lack of an insurance crisis.

The study indicates that while inflation has decreased in some areas since the pandemic, it remains a persistent issue in these states. The rising costs of housing, groceries, and insurance are key factors driving up living expenses in these regions.
