California Gas Tax Increase and New Laws Take Effect Today

Starting Tuesday, Californians will see changes affecting various aspects of daily life, including a slight increase in the gas tax. The state’s gas tax for regular gasoline will rise by a little more than one penny, bringing the total to 61.2 cents per gallon. Diesel will see an increase from 45.4 cents to 46.6 cents per gallon, according to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.

In addition to the gas tax hike, California’s revamped Low Carbon Fuel Standard takes effect, aiming to reduce climate-warming gases. The impact on gas prices remains uncertain, as it depends on the oil industry’s spending on credits and potential costs passed to consumers. Experts estimate this could add five to eight cents per gallon in the future, though no immediate price hike is expected, as reported by CalMatters.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s office has addressed misinformation regarding gas prices, stating that current prices are lower than a month ago and significantly lower than last year. The office emphasized that recent claims of drastic price increases are unfounded, according to CA.gov.

Beyond fuel-related changes, new state laws also include increased wages for healthcare workers, new regulations for short-term rental properties, and safety measures for domestic workers. Additionally, restaurants must now provide lids for alcoholic beverages upon request to prevent spiked drinks.
