California Bill Offers Cash for Homeowners to Fireproof Homes

A new bill in California, Assembly Bill 888, known as the California Safe Homes Act, proposes to provide financial assistance to homeowners for fireproofing their properties. The bill aims to help low- and middle-income property owners in fire-risk areas by offering grants for wildfire mitigation efforts, such as clearing vegetation and installing fire-resistant roofing.

The state insurance department will be responsible for distributing these grants. The measure is part of California’s broader strategy to require homeowners to take proactive steps to protect their properties from wildfires. According to the Orange County Register, the grants are specifically targeted at those living in areas most susceptible to wildfires.

As California faces increasing wildfire threats, the bill represents a significant effort to enhance property safety and reduce potential fire damage. The legislation is still in the proposal stage and will need to pass through the legislative process before becoming law.
