As San Diego prepares for the annual Comic-Con event, California Attorney General Rob Bonta and event leaders have joined forces to raise awareness about human trafficking. They provided tips to help combat this issue, which often spikes during large gatherings like Comic-Con. The San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, led by the California Department of Justice, will be conducting operations throughout the event to address the problem.
According to NBC Los Angeles, human trafficking is one of the world’s fastest-growing criminal enterprises, generating an estimated $150 billion annually. Victims are often isolated by traffickers and may appear to have legal jobs but are exploited for little or no pay.
Bonta emphasized the importance of public vigilance, urging attendees to report any suspicious activity. “Comic-Con is an incredible event that brings people from all over the world together in San Diego to celebrate creativity, art, and community,” Bonta said. “We’re grateful to Comic-Con International for using their platform in partnership with my office to raise awareness of human trafficking.”
The San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force will work with victim advocate groups and adopt a survivor-oriented approach. Public awareness tips include recognizing signs of trafficking and understanding that forced labor can occur in various industries.
If you suspect human trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888. If someone is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
