Bystanders Convince Gunman Who Fatally Shot Cops To Drop Gun And Surrender

In Tremonton, Utah, two police officers were killed and a sheriff’s deputy was injured when a suspect opened fire during a domestic disturbance call on Sunday night (August 17). The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. when officers from the Tremonton Garland Police Department and a deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple 911 hang-up calls at a residence near North Park Elementary School.

The suspect emerged from the home and opened fire, killing two officers and injuring the deputy and his police K-9. The deputy was later released from the hospital, and the K-9 is expected to recover. Bystanders, believed to be neighbors, convinced the gunman to put down his weapon, allowing additional responding officers to take him into custody. The suspect is now facing charges of aggravated murder and is being held at the Box Elder County Jail.

The tragic event has deeply affected the local community and the state. Tremonton Mayor Lyle Holmgren expressed condolences, stating, “Our community is deeply saddened by the tragic and senseless act of violence.” Utah Governor Spencer Cox and other state leaders have also extended their support and condolences to the families of the fallen officers and the wounded deputy.

A procession is planned to honor the fallen officers, with Tremonton city offices closing early on Monday to prepare for the event. The community has been encouraged to hold flags along the procession route as a sign of respect and solidarity.
