Bystanders Confront, Detain Man Who Started Brushfire In California

On Sunday (July 13), a group of Californians confronted and detained a man accused of starting a fire at Runyon Canyon in Los Angeles until police arrived to arrest him. The tense encounter was captured on video, showing the suspect, wearing a red tank top, admitting to starting the fire when questioned by bystanders. “You started that fire? You just came from over there, we just saw you,” a woman is heard asking the man, who replied, “I did, you’re right.”

Witnesses described the suspect claiming to be a fire marshal conducting a controlled burn, but he failed to provide any identification when asked. One witness, Scotty Mitchell, remarked, “I said, ‘Show me your badge.’ Clearly, he didn’t have a badge.”

The fire crews quickly arrived on the scene, managing to contain the blaze to under half an acre. The identity of the suspect remains unclear, and the Los Angeles Police Department has not yet provided a comment on the incident.
