A bus carrying a church group overturned on Highway 330 in Running Springs, California, on Sunday night (November 9), injuring 19 people, most of whom were juveniles. The crash occurred just before 9 p.m., shutting down the highway in both directions for several hours as emergency crews responded. According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department and California Highway Patrol, three individuals sustained severe injuries, while the rest suffered minor injuries.
The bus was transporting a group from a church retreat in Big Bear back to Santa Ana when the incident happened. Witnesses reported that the bus caught fire before crashing and flipping over. One witness described the driver attempting to control the vehicle before it overturned. Fortunately, all passengers managed to escape, with some exiting through the top hatch of the bus.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that the bus was carrying 36 people, including both teens and adults. Initial reports suggested a higher number of passengers, but this was later corrected. Emergency responders declared the situation a mass casualty incident due to the number of injuries.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but authorities have ruled out driving under the influence as a factor. VVNG.com reported that the highway was closed from Live Oak near Running Springs to Highland Avenue in Highland but has since been reopened.
