Burbank’s First Dog Park Nears Final Approval

Burbank is close to opening its first dog park after decades of community requests. The park, located at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Bob Hope Drive, is in the final stages of approval with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). Michael Del Campo, Burbank’s Assistant Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Director, emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “This is my top priority project.”

The park’s development began in spring 2023 after the completion of LADWP’s River Supply Conduit 7 project, which involved significant infrastructure upgrades. The project has been carefully coordinated due to the site’s ongoing maintenance needs, requiring all development plans to undergo LADWP’s approval process. In February 2024, city staff presented three design concepts to the Parks and Recreation Board, which then selected a preferred design. Following community input, the project has progressed through construction phases, with current plans at 90% completion.

The park will feature a specialized surface blend of 70% sand and 30% pea gravel, known as “dog park blend,” providing excellent drainage and allowing dogs to dig safely. The project is fully funded through compensation from LADWP’s project, county grants, a $150,000 sponsorship from the Dick Clark Foundation, and additional grants, totaling an estimated $2.4 million.

Once LADWP approves the final plans, the city will move quickly to the bidding process, aiming for early 2026. Construction is expected to take 90-120 days. The park will include a commemorative paver program, allowing residents to honor pets or family members. Updates will be provided through Parks and Recreation Board meetings and official communications channels.
