In keeping with the World Series theme this weekend, you can get ready for a cinematic triple play in theaters.
First up, “Deliver Me From Nowhere” takes audiences deep into the soul of Bruce Springsteen. Jeremy Allen White trades his “The Bear” apron for a guitar strap in this emotional biopic chronicling the making of “Nebraska,” one of Springsteen’s most haunting and personal albums. Critics are already calling it an early awards contender for its raw storytelling and White’s uncanny transformation into The Boss. But many reviewers think this will appeal only to Springsteen fans because of its niche look at a very small portion of his life.
Then there’s “Blue Moon,” a stylish noir romance that’s equal parts mystery and melancholy. Think “La La Land” meets “Gone Girl,” with a lunar twist. Set in 1943, Ethan Hawke stars as lyricist Lorenz Hart as he confronts his shattered self-confidence in a bar while his former collaborator, Richard Rodgers, celebrates the opening night of his groundbreaking hit musical “Oklahoma!” Musical history fans will love it.
And finally, “Bugonia” offers something truly out of this world, a darkly funny sci-fi satire that follows two friends who believe they’ve discovered alien life hiding among Earth’s bees. It’s sharp, strange, and totally unforgettable. Oscar buzz is buzzing again for Emma Stone and her co-star Jesse Plemons.
To see which movies hit it out of the park, tune in to the “Gary and Shannon” show on KFI every Friday for Heather Brooker’s full reviews and previews of what’s worth your money and time at the box office.
