Over a dozen people were killed when a wedding party bus careened off the Telchi Bridge and fell into the Indus River in Pakistan. The bride and groom were among those who died in the tragic accident.
Officials said there were 27 passengers on the bus, which was part of a wedding procession that was heading to Pakistan’s Chakwal district. Investigators said the bus driver was speeding when he lost control as he crossed the Telchi Bridge and crashed into the Indus River.
It is unclear how many people were killed in the crash, with some outlets reporting that the death toll was as high as 22. However, local officials have said that 16 bodies have been recovered from the water.
“Sixteen dead bodies have been recovered from the river, while the search for the remaining persons continues,” Senior Superintendent of Police Diamer, Sher Khan, told Dawn.com.
According to Reuters, fatal accidents are common in rural parts of Pakistan, where many roads are in disrepair. In August, a pair of bus accidents in northern Pakistan left 34 people dead.
