Bret Michaels, the lead singer of Poison, has withdrawn from the Freedom 250 concert series in Washington, D.C., citing concerns over the event’s evolving nature. Scheduled to take place on the National Mall this summer, the concert series is part of the Great American State Fair organized by President Trump’s Freedom 250 commission to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
Michaels, who announced his decision on Instagram, expressed disappointment that the event, initially presented as a celebration of the country and its veterans, has become more divisive. He stated, “Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of.” Michaels also cited safety concerns for his fans, band, and crew as reasons for his withdrawal.
Other artists, including Martina McBride, the Commodores, Morris Day, and Young MC, have also pulled out of the event. According to AOL, Michaels emphasized that his shows are about bringing people together through music and positivity, not politics.
The Freedom 250 concert series has faced backlash over its perceived political ties, despite claims of being nonpartisan. Variety reported that Martina McBride and other artists withdrew after learning of the event’s political connections. The Freedom 250 website describes the event as a celebration of America’s states and territories, but artists have expressed concerns about its alignment with political agendas.
Despite the withdrawals, some artists, like Vanilla Ice, remain committed to performing at the event. The concert series is set to run from June 25 through July 10, featuring live music, carnival rides, and various activities. Admission is free, but attendees must register for tickets in advance.
