An eight-year-old boy from Lexington, Kentucky, accidentally ordered 70,000 Dum-Dum lollipops using his mother’s phone, resulting in a $4,200 charge. Holly LaFavers, the boy’s mother, discovered the purchase after checking her bank account on Sunday (May 4) and noticed it was overdrawn. Her son, Liam, had been using her phone to browse Amazon and mistakenly placed the order while she was making breakfast.
Liam, who has fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, was trying to plan a carnival for his friends and ordered the lollipops as prizes. The disorder affects his understanding of cause and effect, which contributed to the mishap. LaFavers immediately contacted Amazon to cancel the order and was advised to reject the delivery to receive a refund. However, the delivery arrived without notice, leaving her with 22 cases of lollipops.
After sharing her story on social media and with local news outlets, Amazon agreed to refund the full amount. LaFavers donated the lollipops to various organizations, including their church, Immanuel Baptist Church, and others who had offered to help. She hopes to raise awareness about fetal alcohol spectrum disorder through this experience.
LaFavers has since adjusted her phone settings to prevent future accidental purchases. Amazon spokesperson Austin Stowe stated, “We’re glad we were able to work directly with this customer to turn a sticky situation into something sweet.”
