Boy, 13, Swims 2.5 Miles To Save Family Swept Out To Sea

A 13-year-old boy, Austin Appelbee, swam nearly two and a half miles through rough ocean waters off the coast of Western Australia to save his family after they were swept out to sea on Friday (January 30). The teen’s actions are being hailed as heroic by police and rescue officials, who say his determination and quick thinking ultimately saved his mother, Joanne Appelbee, and his siblings, Beau, age 12, and Grace, age eight.

The family, visiting from Perth, had been kayaking and paddleboarding near Quindalup in Geographe Bay when strong winds and rough seas pushed them away from shore. Austin first tried to paddle for help on an inflatable kayak but abandoned it when it began taking on water. He then removed his life jacket, fearing it would slow him down, and began swimming alone toward land.

Despite massive waves and fading daylight, Austin swam for nearly four hours, reaching shore around 6 p.m. local time. Austin then ran another 1.25 miles to find a phone and alert authorities.

His actions prompted a large-scale search and rescue operation involving the Western Australia Water Police, volunteer marine rescue crews, and the state’s rescue helicopter. Around 8:30 p.m., rescuers found Joanne, Beau, and Grace clinging to a paddleboard about nine miles from shore. The family had spent up to 10 hours in the water, wearing life jackets and trying to stay positive despite worsening conditions. All four family members were cold but survived without any serious injuries.

“The actions of the 13-year-old boy cannot be praised highly enough — his determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings,” said Police Inspector James Bradley. Marine Rescue commander Paul Bresland described the effort as “superhuman,” noting, “Two hours without a life jacket on, and yeah, he made it.”

Authorities are reminding the public to be cautious of strong offshore winds and changing ocean conditions, especially when using small watercraft. The family was treated by paramedics and released after medical checks. Local marine rescue officials have praised Austin’s bravery and the family’s resilience.
