Boston Celtics Sold To New Owner In Record-Setting Deal

Symphony Technology Group managing partner Bill Chisholm has reportedly agreed to purchase the Boston Celtics from the Grousbeck family for a valuation for $6.1 billion, which is the largest sale of a North American sports franchise in history, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPN‘s Shams Charania on Thursday (March 20).

The sale surpasses the previous record set when a group led by billionaire Josh Harris purchased the NFL’s Washington Commanders for $6.05 billion in 2023.

“BREAKING: Bill Chisholm, managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, has agreed to purchase the Boston Celtics from the Grousbeck family for a valuation for $6.1 billion, sources tell ESPN. This now is the largest sale for a sports franchise in North America,” Charania wrote on his X account. “The Boston Celtics’ sale of $6.1 billion surpasses the NFL’s Washington Commanders ($6.05 billion) for the highest sum ever for a North America sports team.”

The Grousbeck family made a massive profit off the sale, having initially purchased the Celtics for $360 million in 2002. The franchise is the winningest in NBA history with a league-best 3,684 regular season victories and 18 NBA championships, having entered the current 2024-25 season as defending world champions.

The Celtics are currently second in the Eastern Conference with a 50-19 overall record entering their final 13 games of the regular season.
