The New Orleans Police Department released body camera footage of the shootout between officers and Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the man who drove a truck through a Bourbon Street crowd hours after midnight on New Year’s Day, killing 14 people.
The video shows the officers with their guns drawn as they approach the white pickup truck used in the attack. Within seconds of an officer yelling, “Put your hands up,” gunfire erupted, causing people to run from the scene.
Jabbar was killed in the shootout.
The department also included a slowed-down version of the video, which captured the muzzle flash from Jabbar’s weapon as he fired it at the officers.
Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick praised the officers involved in the shooting, identifying them as Sgt. Nigel Daggs and Officers Christian Beyer and Jacobie Jordan.
“They killed the terrorist,” Kirkpatrick said. “They are national heroes.”
Kirkpatrick noted that additional body camera footage will be released as the investigation continues.
The FBI confirmed that Jabbar acted alone and that it was an act of terrorism, noting that an ISIS flag was found in his vehicle. Investigators also found improvised explosive devices in his truck and placed in other areas of the French Quarter.
