Blood Pressure Medication Recall Affects Over 11,000 Bottles Nationwide

More than 11,000 bottles of a widely used blood pressure medication have been recalled across the United States after failing quality control tests, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

On Wednesday (June 5), the FDA announced the recall of 11,460 bottles of chlorthalidone tablets, USP, 25 mg, due to “failed dissolution specifications.” This means the pills may not dissolve in the body as intended, making them potentially less effective in treating high blood pressure or related conditions. The recall affects both 100-count bottles (lot code RISA24001) and 1,000-count bottles (lot code RISB24002), all with an expiration date of April 2027. The medication was manufactured by Inventia Healthcare Limited of Mumbai, India, and distributed in the U.S. by Rising Pharma Holdings, Inc. in East Brunswick, New Jersey, as noted by the FDA enforcement report.

Chlorthalidone is a diuretic prescribed to manage high blood pressure (hypertension) and fluid retention caused by conditions like congestive heart failure, severe liver or kidney disease, or medication side effects. When a medication fails dissolution tests, its active ingredient may not be released properly, resulting in potential ineffectiveness for patients who rely on it for blood pressure control.

Patients who possess the recalled chlorthalidone bottles should contact their pharmacy or healthcare provider for guidance. The recall is ongoing, and the FDA continues to monitor the situation.

The recall follows a similar nationwide recall in May for another hypertension medication, amlodipine and olmesartan medoxomil, which was also pulled due to failed dissolution specifications.
