Bird Eggs, Chicks Rescued from Wind-Damaged Tree in Marina del Rey

In Marina del Rey, California, a rescue mission saved dozens of bird eggs and chicks from a wind-damaged eucalyptus tree that was at risk of collapsing. On March 10, a team from the International Bird Rescue’s Los Angeles Wildlife Center, along with the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, worked to safely remove 20 nests containing 47 eggs and 12 chicks, all double-crested cormorants.

The tree, located in Burton Chace Park, had become unstable after strong winds caused a trunk to fall, threatening the safety of the birds and nearby park visitors. Nicole Mooradian, a spokesperson for the Department of Beaches and Harbors, explained that the tree was on the verge of collapse, posing a danger to the public and wildlife.

The rescued eggs and chicks were transported to the wildlife center in San Pedro, where staff are providing intensive care. The chicks, some of which are already eating whole fish, require feeding every hour from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Staff members wear disguises and use decoys to prevent the birds from becoming too accustomed to humans, ensuring they can be released back into the wild when ready.

According to ABC News, double-crested cormorants are colonial nesters, often crowding into a single tree. The birds are expected to remain at the center for up to three months until they can fly and hunt independently. The goal is to release them into existing cormorant colonies.

The rescue highlights the challenges faced by these birds, which can be both beneficial and detrimental to their environments. Cormorants are known for their significant fish consumption and the damage their guano can cause to vegetation. Despite these challenges, the rescue operation underscores the commitment to wildlife preservation and the delicate care required to raise these hatchlings.

Bird Rescue is seeking public support to help with the ongoing care of the rescued birds.
