A proposed housing development near Big Bear Lake, known as Moon Camp, is causing concern among environmentalists and community members. The project, which includes 58 residential lots and a marina with 55 boat slips, is located near the nesting site of the famous bald eagle pair, Jackie and Shadow. These eagles have become a beloved symbol in the area, with many people following their lives through a live stream operated by Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV).
The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors will reconsider the proposal on Tuesday. The project, previously approved, has faced legal challenges over inadequate fire evacuation routes and potential impacts on endangered plants and wildlife, including the federally protected bald eagles. FOBBV has been vocal in opposing the development, citing concerns about the impact on the eagles’ habitat and the natural environment. They argue that the project would lead to increased noise, traffic, and the destruction of over 2,000 trees.
According to KTLA, FOBBV has won several environmental lawsuits against the project in the past. However, developers claim that the plans have been modified to be environmentally sound and accuse FOBBV of using the eagles to delay the project. Some local residents express understanding for the need for housing but remain concerned about the environmental impact.
The public can voice their opinions at the Board of Supervisors meeting or submit comments online. The meeting will take place at 10 a.m. at the county building in San Bernardino, with the Moon Camp proposal as the last item on the agenda. VV Daily Press reports that the final environmental impact report for the project is available for public review online.
