Big Bear Eaglets Sunny and Gizmo Are Close To Their First Flight

Sunny and Gizmo, the eaglets born to the famous Big Bear bald eagle pair Jackie and Shadow, are now nine weeks old and showing signs they may soon take their first flight. These young eagles have been captivating viewers with their development, as they practice crucial skills needed for independence.

According to Friends of Big Bear Valley, Sunny and Gizmo have recently achieved significant milestones. They have begun self-feeding, a critical step towards independence, and are practicing standing on one leg, which is important for maintaining warmth in cold conditions. Their synchronized wing flapping, or “wingersizing,” indicates they are building the strength and coordination needed for flight.

The eaglets have also been observed by VVNG.com demonstrating their growing strength and coordination. Sunny’s wingspan now stretches across the six-foot-wide nest, and both eaglets are keenly observing the skies, learning from their vigilant parents. Their parents, Jackie and Shadow, continue to play a vital role in their upbringing, teaching them essential skills and protecting them from potential threats.

With bald eagles typically taking their first flight between 10 and 12 weeks of age, Sunny and Gizmo are expected to leave the nest soon. Wildlife enthusiasts can follow their progress through the Big Bear Eagle Cam and stay updated on their journey to independence.
