‘Barn Cat Program’ Finds New Roles for Feral Cats

The Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter (VBAS) have launched the ‘Barn Cat Program’ to provide feral cats with new homes and purposes. The initiative aims to reduce euthanasia rates and offer a humane solution to rodent problems by placing these “working cats” in barns, backyards, warehouses, and other nontraditional environments. These cats, feral by nature, are not suited for indoor living or human companionship. However, through the program, they can live out their lives with purpose and protection.

According to KTLA, each cat is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and delivered by VBAS volunteers to a new location, where they are initially kept in kennels to acclimate. Adopters are asked to provide food, water, and shelter while the cats help control pests. The program aims to reverse the trend of euthanizing feral cats due to a lack of suitable homes.

The VBAS emphasizes that these are not housecats and are content to live in their new environments while avoiding human contact. The shelter currently has several cats ready for placement and is urging those with suitable spaces to consider adoption as a mutually beneficial arrangement. Interested parties can contact the shelter at barncat@thevbas.org for more information.
