Federal and state health officials are investigating 13 cases of infant botulism linked to ByHeart Inc.’s Whole Nutrition Infant Formula. The cases span 10 states, including California, Arizona, and New Jersey. All affected infants were hospitalized after consuming formula from two specific lots: 206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), alongside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is working to determine the source of contamination. ByHeart Inc. has agreed to recall the affected lots. The formula, which represents less than 1% of the national market, was available online and at major retailers.
Symptoms of infant botulism, such as constipation and difficulty swallowing, can take weeks to appear. The CDC advises parents to monitor their infants closely and seek medical attention if symptoms develop. Consumers should check the lot numbers on their formula cans and dispose of or return the affected products. The FDA continues to investigate the outbreak and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
