At least nine people were killed and multiple others injured after a driver plowed an SUV into a crowd during a street festival in Vancouver, Canada, Saturday (April 26) night, the Vancouver Police Department announced on its X account.
“A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured after a driver drove into a crowd at a street festival at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser shortly after 8 p.m. tonight. The driver is in custody. We will provide more information as the investigation unfolds,” the department said.
The department shared several updates on the incident, including a post claiming it was “confident that this incident was not an act of terrorism.” The incident took place near the location of the Lapu-Lapu Day block party, an event celebrating Filipino culture.
Vancouver Police Department interim chief Steve Rai described the “lone suspect” as being a male who “drove through a crowded community event occurring near here” while addressing reporters.
“That male was taken into custody at the scene by the crowd,” Rai said via NBC News. “Going forward, the entire investigative component — sections of the Vancouver Police Department — with support of other areas will be conducting a full investigation of what occurred here tonight.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney offered condolences in a post shared on his X account.
“I am devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening. I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver,” Carney wrote. “We are all mourning with you. We are monitoring the situation closely, and thankful to our first responders for their swift action.”
