At least six FBI agents who worked on the 2022 search of President Donald Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago residence between his administrations were reportedly fired on Wednesday (February 25), multiple sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ABC News.
The firings reportedly took place after FBI Director Kash Patel told Reuters phone records belonging to him and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, which took place when both were private citizens in 2022 and 2023, had been subpoenaed by the FBI. The records were collected for special counsel Jack Smith investigation into Trump’s handling of classified information during his first presidential term, according to Reuters.
ABC News said the FBI didn’t respond to its request for comments regarding the firings or the Reuters story. The FBI Agents Association, however, issued a statement calling the firings unlawful.
“The FBIAA condemns today’s unlawful termination of FBI Special Agents, which –like other firings by Director Patel — violates the due process rights of those who risk their lives to protect our country,” the organization said via ABC News. “These actions weaken the Bureau by stripping away critical expertise and destabilizing the workforce, undermining trust in leadership and jeopardizing the Bureau’s ability to meet its recruitment goals –ultimately putting the nation at greater risk.”
