A young girl was killed and four others were hospitalized in connection with a mass shooting that took place during a high school hockey game in Rhode Island on Monday (February 16), WPRI reports.
The full number of wounded victims wasn’t immediately known, but the suspect was killed at the scene in broad daylight and authorities confirmed that they weren’t searching for additional suspects, according to a statement shared by the Pawtucket mayor’s office obtained by WPRI. The incident was reported at Lynch Arena, the home ice for the Johnson and Wales Wildcats hockey team.
Teams from Coventry, Johnston, North Providence, and North Smithfield high schools were participating in games with St. Raphael Academy and Providence Country Day School when shots were fired at the facility. An employee at a nearby Walgreens said people came running into the store from the scene before staffers were instructed to evacuate the store to allow the victims to hide inside as 911 was called.
Braden Mello, who works as a local sports editor, said the incident took place when two rival high schools, Coventry and Blackstone Valley, were playing.
“Harrowing scenes here at Dennis Lynch Arena where gunshots were fired at a boys hockey game between Blackstone Valley Schools. Shors came from the stands behind the BVS bench. Police and EMTs are on the scene,” Mello wrote on his X account.
