Arrest Made In FBI Probe Of Jan. 6 Pipe Bomb Case: Report

A Virginia man was reportedly arrested by federal authorities for allegedly placing two pipe bombs outside the headquarters of the Democratic and Republican National Committees on the night before the January 6, 2021, attack on the United States Capitol, a law enforcement official confirmed to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity Thursday (December 4).

The reported arrest marked the first time that a suspect was determined by investigators in relation to the probe, which has sparked several conspiracy theories and remained a mystery, having been overshadowed by the Capitol riot. The official confirmed the arrest on the condition of anonymity as they’re not authorized to publicly discuss the case prior to it being made public.

The suspect was arrested Thursday morning and additional details, including the man’s identity and potential charges he could face, were not immediately made available at the time of publication. The pipe bombs were placed near the Democratic and Republican National Committees’ offices in Washington, D.C., on the night of January 5, 2021.

The bombs were rendered safe and no injuries were reported, however, the FBI said both devices had the potential to be lethal. Supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in protest of his 2020 election loss to former President Joe Biden following his ‘Stop the Steal’ rally.

Trump pardoned more than 1,500 people convicted of or awaiting trial of sentencing for offenses related to the January 6 Capitol attack upon taking office for his second of two non-consecutive presidential terms in January.
