A teenager who tried to steal a plane at a regional airport in Arkansas was taken into custody on Tuesday (February 4) thanks to a quick-thinking pilot. The 15-year-old entered Texarkana Regional Airport armed with several guns and walked the counter demanding a plane.
He chambered a round in one of the guns and brandished it at the employee. She told the teen she would help him and went into a back office, where she called the police.
The teen then breached security and made his way onto the airfield. As he approached a plane, he was confronted by an armed pilot who ordered him to get on the ground. The teen complied, and the pilot disarmed him, holding him until the police arrived and detained him.
The teen, whose name was not released, was armed with a pistol and a semiautomatic rifle. Officers also found a shotgun in his car.
He was taken into custody and transferred to a juvenile facility. He was charged with aggravated assault, attempted aggravated robbery, and first-degree terrorist threatening.
“The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department applauds the heroic act by the local pilot,” the department said in a statement. “The fact that this incident was resolved quickly and peacefully, despite the extreme danger presented, is highly commendable.”
Officials have not said why the teen wanted to steal a plane.
