Armed Man Shot By Secret Service Near White House

An unidentified armed Indiana man was shot by United States Secret Service agents one block away from the White House Sunday (March 9) morning, spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi confirmed on his X account.

“Secret Service personnel were involved in a shooting following an armed encounter with a person of interest shortly after midnight on March 9 at 17th and G Streets NW. Media staging area will be at 17th and Pennsylvania,” Guglielmi wrote.

The man’s parked car was spotted by federal agents by the intersection of 17th and F Street near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is located one block west of the White House’s West Wing.

The man reportedly walked north toward Pennsylvania Avenue and was met by Secret Service agents, with an “armed confrontation” occurring after the man pulled out a firearm just after midnight. Secret Service agents fired shots at the man, who was reportedly hospitalized in an unknown condition, while no agents were reported to have been injured during the incident, according to the agency.

President Donald Trump was staying at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida at the time of the incident. The man was described as a “suicidal individual” and believed to have traveled from Indiana, which led to local police notifying the Secret Service, though his motives were unclear as of Sunday morning.

An investigation into the incident is being led by the DC Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division. A 51-year-old man was previously shot by Secret Service agents during Trump’s first term in August 2020.

The suspect was reported to have fired shots towards the White House before “running aggressively” towards agents, at which point he was shot in the torso. Trump. who was giving a press briefing inside the West Wing at the time, was temporarily removed from the briefing room but later returned after being given clearance.
