A section of Angeles Crest Highway near the Mt. Waterman ski lifts has collapsed after recent storms, prompting an extensive road closure.
The closure affects State Route 2, spanning from Cedar Springs, 3.3 miles east of Newcomb’s Ranch, to State Route 138. Aerial footage from AIR7 captured the dramatic buckling of the asphalt, a result of a landslide in the Angeles National Forest.
Caltrans officials have been on-site, assessing the damage and coordinating repair efforts. According to Caltrans, the storm caused significant damage to the roadbed in at least four locations. “We are working diligently to assess the full extent of the damage and begin repairs,” a Caltrans spokesperson stated. Despite the severity of the collapse, no crashes or injuries have been reported.
The highway remains closed in both directions, and it is currently unclear when it will reopen. Caltrans crews are focused on evaluating the damage and planning the necessary repairs. The agency has not provided a timeline for the reopening, as damage assessments are ongoing.
The collapse has disrupted travel plans for many in the area, particularly during the busy holiday season. Local residents and travelers are advised to seek alternative routes and stay updated on road conditions through Caltrans’ official channels.
