Cypress High School and Loara High School in Anaheim, California, have installed vape detectors in restrooms and locker rooms to combat student vaping. The detectors can sense vape smoke and aerosols, alerting school staff through an app if vaping is detected. This initiative is part of a pilot program approved by the Anaheim Union High School District, which allocated $75,120 for the equipment, software, and installation.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the detectors can also monitor noise levels, helping staff detect arguments or fights. The detectors, called HALO, integrate with existing security systems and can differentiate between vaping, vaping with THC, and attempts to mask vaping with aerosols.
Assistant Superintendent Jaron Fried emphasized the proactive nature of the sensors, aiming to prevent vaping rather than just catching students in the act. The Voice of OC reported that the sensors will last about seven years, with minimal ongoing costs after the initial investment. The district also plans educational programs to inform students about the dangers of vaping.
Currently, Cypress and Loara High Schools are the only schools in the district with these detectors. The district will evaluate the pilot’s success before considering wider implementation.
