Anaheim Postpones Disneyland Gate Tax Discussion

Anaheim officials have delayed a discussion on a proposed gate tax for Disneyland and other large entertainment venues. The debate, initially scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed to October. The proposal, backed by Councilwoman Natalie Rubalcava, aims to address a $64 million budget deficit by generating revenue from tourists rather than residents.

Rubalcava, whose campaign received significant support from Disney, requested the delay to gather more information and ensure a comprehensive debate. She stated, “I would like to work with staff to gather additional information and data to ensure all policymakers have the comprehensive details necessary to make a thoughtful, well-informed decision on this important issue” (Voice of OC).

The proposed tax would levy fees on entertainment tickets and parking, with the potential to fund a new police facility, senior center, and other city needs. The idea of a gate tax has faced resistance, particularly from Disney, which has historically opposed such measures. In 2022, a similar proposal by former Councilman Jose Moreno failed due to strong opposition from Disney representatives (Voice of OC).

The discussion is now expected to take place on October 28, with any potential tax needing voter approval in the November 2026 general election. If the City Council does not place the proposal on the ballot, community groups could collect signatures to qualify it (City of Anaheim).
