Anaheim police have successfully recovered two valuable sculptures by artist Sir Daniel Winn, valued at over $2 million, just days after they were stolen from a secure facility. Community tips led investigators to a trailer where the sculptures were hidden, confirmed Anaheim Police Sgt. Matt Sutter on Sunday.
The sculptures, “Quantum Mechanics: Homme” and “Icarus Within,” were taken from an unmarked facility in Anaheim Hills, which was set to become Winn’s new showroom. The theft occurred sometime over the weekend of June 14-15, with the pieces disappearing between Saturday night and Monday morning. Police believe the thieves used a forklift and other construction tools to move the heavy sculptures, which typically require a dozen men to transport.
“Quantum Mechanics: Homme,” an 8-foot-tall creation depicting a winged and horned man, weighs 4,000 pounds and is valued at $1.8 million. “Icarus Within,” also 8 feet tall, is valued at $350,000. Both pieces hold significant personal meaning for Winn, who described them as his legacy.
The sculptures were found inside a trailer parked at an Anaheim residence, thanks to community tips. No arrests have been made yet, and the investigation is ongoing. The sophistication of the theft has led police to believe that someone familiar with the facility was involved.
Winn, recently appointed as the art commissioner for John Wayne Airport, expressed relief at the recovery of his artwork, which he considers his “children.” He had feared the pieces might be destroyed for scrap metal or end up on the black market.
